Data Access and Participation

1       Determination of Apertif participation

The ASDT, on behalf of the ASTRON MT, oversees the application of policies and manages participation in the Apertif surveys.

2       Levels of participation

2.1      Apertif builder

Builders have contributed significantly to the development of the Apertif instrument and/or to the infrastructure for the scientific operation of the surveys. All Apertif builders are full Apertif participants (Sec 3.2). The ASDT, on behalf of the ASTRON MT, maintains a list of the Apertif builders.

2.2      Apertif participant

An Apertif participant has made a major contribution to the Apertif project (equivalent of one FTE or more).

2.3      External participants

An external participant provides access to external resources/datasets that are complementary to Apertif or a contribution to Apertif that is significant, but does not rise to the level of a full Apertif participant.

3       Rights and responsibilities of participants by level

3.1      Builder rights and responsibilities

Apertif builders are full participants and have all the rights and reponsibilities thereof. In addition, they have the right to be included as co-authors on key publications (Apertif publication policy).

3.2      Participant rights and responsibilities

Apertif participants have the right to define science projects that make use of proprietary Apertif data. The ASDT oversees the list of defined science projects to prevent conflict among different participants.

Apertif participants have the responsibility to make sure that there is forward progress on all defined science projects. If there is no progress on a science project, the ASDT may allow another (external) participant to work on that project.

An Apertif participant may sponsor an unlimited number of postdocs or other short-term staff and an unlimited number of graduate and undergraduate students.

An Apertif participant is responsible for making sure they and their sponsored researchers follow the Apertif Code of Conduct.

3.3      External participants rights and responsibilities

External participants have the right to define a limited number of science projects that make use of proprietary Apertif data. Typically this will be one-two well-defined projects, but is left to the discretion of the ASDT.  For external participants providing access to complementary data/facilities, these projects be dependent on the external contribution.

External participants have the responsibility to ensure forward progress on defined projects, or the ASDT may allow another participant to work on that project.

External participants may sponsor a limited number of postdocs or graduate students and an unlimited number of undergraduate students. Typically, one postdoc or graduate student may be sponsored per defined science project.

External participants must follow the Code of Conduct and ensure all their sponsored researchers do the same.

External participation rules may be overruled by MoUs.

4       Code of conduct

4.1      Professional Conduct

The ASDT is dedicated to providing a harassment-free environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, age, political opinion or religion. Harrassment in any form is not tolerated.

All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery should not be used at any time. This applies to presentations and posters at conferences and in meetings, but also to general conduct.
Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate.

4.2      Data access

All Apertif participants (full and external) agree to only access data for science projects approved by the ASDT

4.3      Publications

All Apertif participants (full and external) agree to abide by the Apertif publication policy.

4.4      Sanctions

If someone is found to be in violations of the policies laid out in this document, including the Code of Conduct, the Apertif Science Delivery Team (ASDT) will undertake appropriate action. This ranges from revoking the right to data access for a specific publication/project to barring Apertif participation to reporting to journals
